OTTAWA – The closure of the Coast Guard’s Marine Communications and Traffic Service centres along BC’s coast at a time when marine traffic is steadily increasing poses unnecessary risks to marine and environmental safety.

Today in the House of Commons, NDP Fisheries and Oceans deputy critic Fin Donnelly (New Westminster–Coquitlam and Port Moody) demanded the Conservatives explain their disregard for BC’s coast:

The Conservatives have made devastating cuts to the Coast Guard in BC,

The Ucluelet/Tofino Marine Communication Centre is now set to close on April 21st

The same centre that just a couple of weeks ago helped save the lives of four fishermen.

And the Vancouver centre is next.

Shore-based readiness, marine communications and traffic services, and search and rescue are all being cut.

Why are the Conservatives closing these centres and putting our coast and mariners at risk?

Why are they abandoning BC’s Coast?
