Canada Must Restrict Shark Fin Imports

OTTAWA – NDP Deputy Critic for Fisheries (West Coast), Fin Donnelly (New Westminster-Coquitlam & Port Moody), is disappointed his private member’s bill to ban the import of shark fins to Canada didn’t pass the second reading vote.

“One hundred million sharks are killed each year to support the wasteful, unsustainable and often illegal trade of their fins. This is having a devastating impact on shark populations and a negative impact on ocean ecosystems,” said Donnelly.

Tens of thousands of Canadians have signed petitions in support of bill C-380. A 2011 Mustel Group poll of 500 British Columbians found an overwhelming 83 per cent are opposed to the import of shark fins.

Many Canadian cities, including the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, have called on the federal government to implement a shark fin import ban.
