Riverview Park Elementary Class Wins Local MP's Litterless Lunch Challenge

OTTAWA – A Coquitlam school has come out on top by winning local MP Fin Donnelly’s third annual Litterless Lunch Challenge.

Ms. Sandra Allen and Ms. Leah Donnelly's grade 3/4 class from Riverview Park Elementary was the winning class, going 91% litter-free during Waste Reduction Week (October 15-19, 2012).

“The commitment from the students at Riverview Park Elementary is an inspiration,” said Donnelly. “The class worked hard to meet the challenge of going waste-free and should be very proud.”

This year, over 50 classes from 10 schools participated, including the entire staff at School District 43. Today, Donnelly rose in Parliament to announce the winning class from Riverview Park Elementary and to congratulate all participating students, parents and teachers.

“Reducing our waste is an important component of sustainable living – it affects our land use, water and air quality,” said Donnelly. “With the average elementary school producing over 20,000 pounds of lunch waste per year, measures like the Litterless Lunch Challenge are an important step in the right direction.”
