Coquitlam – In two months, New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly’s postcard campaign to save BC’s wild salmon has jumped from 1,000 to 5,000 signatures.
“This summer saw one of the greatest salmon returns in almost a century” said Donnelly. “The overwhelming support for my campaign over the past two months demonstrates how British Columbians do not want this to be the last great year for wild salmon”.
NDP Fisheries and Ocean critic Donnelly launched his campaign in June in support of his private Member’s bill C-518, to move west coast salmon farms from harmful open net operations to safe closed containment systems. He recently paddled with the Paddle for Wild Salmon from New Westminster to the Musqueam.
“I have seen tremendous support for my bill across the province”, said Donnelly. “My office has already received 5,000 signatures asking the Minister to strengthen the Fisheries Act by legislating all BC salmon farms to use closed containment systems. It is time for the Federal government to take action and protect BC’s wild salmon”.
Since the campaign launch, Fin Donnelly has been joined by Canadian television and film icon, William Shatner, award-winning salmon activist Alexandra Morton, executive Chef Robert Clark and thousands of British Columbians who have signed postcards or the online petition to support his bill.
