NDP MP Fin Donnelly seeks to extend EI benefits for seriously ill

Georgia Straight, 15 November 2011 By Stephen Thomson

New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly is renewing his effort to have medical Employment Insurance benefits extended for those suffering from serious illnesses like cancer.

Donnelly reintroduced a private member’s bill in the House of Commons today (November 15) that would increase the benefit period to 52 weeks from 15.

“Canadians who are struck with catastrophic illnesses should be able to focus on recovery, and not have to worry about how they will survive financially,” the MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam said in a news release.

Donnelly has received letters and emails from hundreds of people who want to see the legislation changed, according to the release.
