NDP MP Fin Donnelly Congratulates Two BC Cities for Passing Shark Fin Bans

Renews calls for federal government to pass national import ban

COQUITLAM – NDP MP Fin Donnelly (New Westminster-Coquitlam & Port Moody) is congratulating the cities of Maple Ridge and North Vancouver for banning shark fins.

Donnelly is also renewing his call for the federal government to pass his legislation to implement a national ban on the import of illegally harvested shark fins.

“I’m pleased to see Maple Ridge and North Vancouver join a host of other Canadian cities by taking action to curb the harmful practice of shark finning,” said Donnelly. “While it’s great that more and more municipalities are doing their part, we need the federal government to do theirs by banning the import of these illegally harvested shark fins into Canada.”

Donnelly’s private member’s bill to ban the import of shark fins to Canada (C-380) is receiving widespread support and is expected to come up for debate in the House of Commons at the end of the year.

Up to 75 million sharks are killed each year for their fins alone, and an estimated one-third of all shark species are now threatened with extinction. The loss of sharks is an international conservation crisis requiring countries like Canada to implement measures that will help curb the demand for illegally harvested shark fin.
