NDP Calls on Government to Act on Cohen Commission Report Recommendations

OTTAWA – Today in Question Period, NDP MP and West Coast Fisheries critic, Fin Donnelly (New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody) asked the Minister to commit to implementing the recommendations to protect wild salmon following the release of the Cohen Commission Report on the Decline of the Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River.
“The Cohen Report is a scathing indictment of failed Conservative fisheries management policies,” said Donnelly. “From inaction on climate change to the gutting of the Fisheries Act and cuts to science, the report is clear: we must do better.”
After completing a two year inquiry, the Cohen Commission Report identified seventy-five recommendations to improve the future sustainability of the Fraser River Sockeye. The comprehensive report highlighted the impact of stressors on wild salmon, such as climate change, aquaculture, habitat protection, and lack of funding for research and science.
“The Conservative government must respect the findings of the report and respond by taking action”, added Donnelly. “Wild salmon are far too important to British Columbians to have this report sit on a shelf and gather dust.”
