NDP CALLS ON DION TO RESPOND TO SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS INVOLVING THE AZER FAMILY

New Democrats are calling on Global Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion to respond to serious allegations of government interference in RCMP interaction with Iranian police, following the abduction of the Azer children. It has been 11 months since Alison Azer’s four children were abducted by their father and they have since been taken to Iran.

“We are deeply concerned about allegations made today regarding the conduct of the Canadian government in relation to the abduction of the four Canadian Azer children,” said NDP MP Gord Johns, who represents Alison Azer’s home riding of Courtenay-Alberni.

The RCMP issued a warrant for the father, Saren Azer, and Interpol issued a Red Notice. Last month, Iranian authorities acted on the Interpol Red Notice and detained Mr. Azer who is wanted on four counts of child abduction. Alison Azer alleges that the RCMP’s request to communicate with Interpol Iran, which is standard procedure in cases like this, was blocked by Canadian government officials.

“We call on the Minister of Global Affairs to respond to these serious allegations and if true, the Minister must immediately explain why officials from his department prevented the RCMP from working to secure the return of these four Canadian children,” said NDP Foreign Affairs critic Hélène Laverdière. “The government must do everything in its power, including working with Iranian authorities, to secure the immediate release of these children and ensure their safe return back to Canada.”
