NDP Calls for Study on Kitsilano Coast Guard Closure

OTTAWA – NDP West Coast Fisheries Critic Fin Donnelly moved a motion today at the Standing Committee on Fisheries & Oceans calling for a study on the impacts of the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.
“There are serious questions about the increase of Coast Guard response times since the closure of the Kitsilano station,” said Donnelly. “There’s a clear need for further study on the consequences of closing the station.”
Vancouver’s only Coast Guard station was closed last month. Several incidents since its closure have raised alarm bells about Coast Guard response times from the Sea Island base in Richmond. The closure has been widely criticized for putting marine safety at-risk. The federal government continues to insist that the closure will have no impact on safety.
In response to the closure, the NDP launched a petition calling on the government to re-open the station. The petition can be found at http://ndp.ca/savekits
