OTTAWA – On Tuesday, Liberals MPs voted down an NDP bill aimed at protecting West Coast wild salmon which are under increasing risk of sea lice and diseases from open net salmon farms.

“Thousands of jobs, sensitive ecosystems, and First Nations culture depend on healthy wild salmon,” said Fin Donnelly, NDP Fisheries Critic and sponsor of the bill. “I am very disappointed that Liberal and Conservative MPs joined together to defeat my bill designed to protect this important species.”

Donnelly’s Bill C-228 would have required West Coast finfish aquaculture to transition from harmful open net-cage fish farms to safe and reliable closed containment systems which protects wild salmon and marine ecosystems.

“Liberal and Conservative MPs voted against wild salmon and the people who depend on them,” said Donnelly. “But I won’t give up, there’s too much at stake.”

Bill C-228 has been endorsed by expert biologists, environmentalists, First Nation leaders, fishing enthusiasts, labour unions and prominent Canadians including David Suzuki and William Shatner.
