Today, NDP MP Fin Donnelly, Port Moody-Coquitlam (Anmore & Belcarra), announced support for his private Member's Bill C-228‎ to #SaveWildSalmon.

“I am thrilled to announce that William Shatner has joined my campaign to save West Coast wild salmon. He has been a strong advocate of wild salmon for years and it's fantastic to have his support,” said Donnelly.

The Canadian Actor and Icon released his online video message of support today. You can view his statement at

Donnelly's bill strengthens the Fisheries Act by requiring West Coast salmon farms to move from harmful open-net pens to safe closed containment systems within 5 years of the bill receiving Royal Assent. It also requires the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to develop, table and implement a transition plan within 18 months of the bill coming into law. This bill will be voted on in the House of Commons later this year.

“West Coast wild salmon are in trouble, and they need greater protection.” said Donnelly. 170 Members of Parliament must vote in favour of this proposed legislation, in order for it to move to the next stage. That's why he's asking Canadians to voice their support for Bill C-228 by contacting their MP directly and telling them to vote to #SaveWildSalmon.”  Donnelly’s campaign is gaining momentum.

Donnelly was joined today by Ruth Foster, Co-Founder of the Mossom Creek Hatchery, Chief Bob Chamberlin of the Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First  Nation and Chair of the First Nations Wild Salmon Alliance; Andrew Wright of the Willow Grove Foundation, and SFU  Professor Emeritus Richard Routledge who expressed their support for his Private Members’ Bill.

Andrew Wright offered his thoughts on the future of salmon aquaculture in BC, “Closed containment holds the promise of creating a diversified enduring rural economy with no environmental impacts. It allows wild and farmed salmon economies and ecosystems to thrive.”

"We can choose to strategically get out of the way of wild salmon and let them return to healthy and abundant run sizes and become the foundation of [the] economy in British Columbia once again," said Chief Bob Chamberlin.

Professor Richard Routledge spoke of the science behind the bill, “The only way that I can see to safeguard this globally significant natural treasure [Wild Salmon] from this very real threat is to require a rapid transition to closed-containment, land based facilities."
